* Law Enforcement Memorial Day is Wednesday May 15. Post 79 will honor law enforcement personnel with a flag lowering ceremony at the Ruidoso Police Department at 8 a.m. Please join us in recognizing the sacrifice these people and their families make to keep us and our property safe.

* A Flag retirement ceremony is scheduled for June 14, Flag Day, at the Veterans Center. We will properly dispose of worn and torn American Flags. The public is invited to the ceremony. If you have a flag that needs to be retired, contact Commander Harold Oakes at the Ruidoso News, 257-4001 or drop the flag off at the Ruidoso News office.

* Join us Saturday, June 15 for the monthly meeting at the Post. This meeting will be held at the Veterans Center, 201 Second Drive, Ruidoso Downs. The time of the monthly meeting is 2 p.m. We will have a pot-luck cook before the meeting, starting around 11 a.m. The work day starts at 9 a.m. and hopefully we can get some additional help to work on the center before the lunch and meeting. All veterans and their families are invited to participate and will be welcome.

Post location

Post 79 has relocated to a new and bigger home at 201 Second Drive in Ruidoso Downs. Work is currently underway to clean up and fix up the main building here to accommodate a meeting room, office and kitchen area. Contact Commander Harold Oakes for more information.

About the American Legion

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.


Eligibility Requirements for American Legion Membership

If you are currently on active duty, serving the United States honorably, anywhere in the world, or have served honorably during any of the following eligible war eras, we invite you to become a member of The American Legion.

  • April 6, 1917 to Nov. 11, 1918 (World War I)
  • Dec. 7, 1941 to Dec. 31, 1946 (World War II)
  • June 25, 1950 to Jan. 31, 1955 (Korean War)
  • Feb. 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975 (Vietnam War)
  • Aug. 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984 (Lebanon / Grenada)
  • Dec. 20, 1989 to Jan. 31, 1990 (Panama)
  • Aug. 2, 1990 to today (Gulf War / War On Terrorism)

About our post

Post 79 is located in Ruidoso Downs and serves veterans, widows of veterans and their families in the Ruidoso, Ruidoso Downs, Alto and the surrounding area. The Post is named in honor of Jerome D. "Donnie" Klein. Donnie was killed in in the Republic of Vietnam March 24, 1971. His father, Romeo Klein is a World War II veteran.
